What Is Birthing Naturally?

Birthing Naturally is a four week childbirth preparation program, designed by a midwife, that speaks to the heart of childbirth.  The program strives to help women feel confident and informed about the process of labor, birth and the immediate postpartum period.

Birthing Naturally explores the basics of childbirth and encourages trust in the process of women giving birth as they were created to do.  While the program is not specific to any birth place or care giver, it is specific to women and birth.

Birthing Naturally is a program that addresses the dynamics of women as individuals, and helping families create their own unique birthing experience. The classes are kept small and intimate, to foster an atmosphere of friendship and trust, and are open to anyone desiring the journey to natural childbirth and seeking the information and tools to help her to get there.

Week 1 - Body Mechanics & Babys Position

During the last trimester moms tend to slow down and make ready for baby.  Often times our activity level, means of self comfort and prenatal health and fitness on the outside can affect the way the baby becomes comfortable inside.   In this class we will discuss comfort measures for late pregnancy discomforts and activities that will promote relaxation as well as encourage baby to take an optimal position in the womb for a more comfortable and easier birth.   Bring a water bottle, a few pillows and a fitness/pilates ball if you have one.

Week 3 - Giving Birth
& The Placenta

This week we will be discussing the physiology of birth, positions for birthing, the placenta and its function, and the third stage of labor.  Childbirth is an intricate dance between mother and baby that must be cooperative.   We will explore how mother and baby can work together to create an easier second stage, and how the placenta, cord clamping and newborn transition are managed during normal birth.  Bring a water bottle and a few pillows.

Week 2 - The Process of Labor

In this class we will talk about the stages of labor, variations of labor, when to contact your care provider, relaxation techniques, comfort measures and coping skills for each stage of labor, and how to find your groove.   Each woman’s ability to cope with labor is as individual as the woman herself.   We will discuss many different coping strategies, such as breathing, visualization, movement and hydrotherapy among other things to help you find your special birth rhythm.   Bring a water bottle, a few pillows and a fitness/pilates ball if you have one.

Week 4 -   Post Partum, The Baby's
Experience of Birth & Breastfeeding

We will wrap up our series with a detailed discussion of the the newborns experience during birth, the postpartum period, and initiating breastfeeding.  There are all sorts of gadgets to help moms feel proficient at this mommy thing, but the most important thing to remember is that all you really need is a few diapers and a set of working breasts.  We will discuss postpartum healing and the emotional component, how your body adjusts to non-pregnant life, the dynamics of the breastfeeding relationship, and what babies really want out of their births.  Bring a water bottle and a pillow or nursing pillow.
