Getting Ready for Your Homebirth

It is time to get ready!  Here are some lists of things you might want on hand.  These lists are in document form at the bottom of the page should you wish to save them to your personal hard drive, or print them out.

Ordering your birth kit:

You will be responsible for ordering your birth kit. This kit contains all of the consumables (disposable supplies) for your personal needs.  If you don’t have internet access let me know and I can help you order it.  You can order it directly from my website by clicking on the shop link on the menu on the left side of the page and follow the instructions for ordering the birth kit.  You may find items on this site other than the optional items listed below.  Feel free to browse and get what your heart desires.

If you desire oral vitamin K for your baby, you will need to order it from Birthwithlove as well.

Joanna Davis-Wiya Ma Midwifery,

  • 1 BWL SitzBath Herbs
  • 1 surgilube tube
  • 2 Cord Ring
  • 1 digital Thermometer w/beeper
  • 2 gauze trays
  • 1 peri bottle
  • 12 under pads 23x36
  • 1 bulb syringe 3 oz
  • 1 Scrub Brush/Hibiclens
  • 2  Sterile-Vinyl, Pairs size large
  • 6 Sterile-Vinyl, single-Medline

If you are going to be renting the birth pool,

you will need a liner for it.

The fee for renting the pool is for maintenance and sterilization of the pool itself, set up (if required), labor/birth maintenance and take down after the birth.  Each time the pool is used a separate sterile liner is also used to provide double protection from contaminants and to ensure each use is clean and sterile.

  • Pool, Aquarian Birthing-Liners – clear please

Here are some things you may need to add to your order from Birthwithlove.com

  • After-Pain Relief-Mountain Meadow Herbs-Montana-Made – a herbal to help ease the after pains, a small bottle will be plenty.
  • Keepsake Birth Certificate-#1 or #2 &
  • Hollister Disposable Infant Foot printers
  • Sitz Bath – may use with the herbal sitz bath that comes in your kit, or whatever else may be prescribed.
  • Comfort Ring-Donut – this is invaluable for hemorrhoids or swollen bottoms!

Occasionally clients ask me “What do you need for your practice”?  If you feel like making a donation for equipment or a gift, there are always things I can use.  Ask me, I won’t be shy!

Purchasing/Gathering your supplies:

All linen supplies should be laundered and placed in a enclosed space where they will remain clean and uncontaminated.  Place all supplies in Rubbermaid bin with a lid or seal in a plastic bag, or place in a closed closet or cabinet.  The bin/bag is portable and can be moved to wherever you end up birthing.  Your towels and receiving blankets will be placed in the paper bags and put in the oven for  warming prior to your birth.

  • 2 sets of sheets for your bed, one you don’t mind getting stained
  • “1 Waterproof sheet, vinyl shower curtain or flannel backed vinyl table cloth
  • “4 good sized towels (may get stained, so dark colors are best)
  • “4 receiving blankets (to wrap/dry baby, again may get messy)
  • 4 wash/face cloths
  • “2 Hats (I don’t include one in the birth kit) and diapers for baby
  • “Non breakable sports bottle or cup with lid and straw
  • “Underwear and menstrual pads (recommend Kotex overnight), extra pkg. of smaller mini pads for ice packs
  • Comfortable gown and slippers or socks for cold feet for mom.  Consider what you want to labor in, especially in the pool if you don’t think you will be comfortable nude, consider a sports bra or bathing suit w/o bottoms, also consider a large towel or robe for trips to the bathroom.
  • Two large stock pots for heating water on the stove.  If you are planning a waterbirth, these are essential.  Borrow if necessary.
  • “Coffee (please!) and 2 gal spring water for drinking for mom and birth team (and mixing remedies into
  • “Light tasty snacks for mom and birth team (fruit, cheese, nuts, protein bars, lunch meat etc.)
  • ‘Tissues, lip balm, lotion, hair ties, face cloths, plenty of TP.
  • 4 paper grocery bags and tape, 2 inch wide masking tape.
  • “Bowl for placenta (glass, plastic or stainless steel are all fine), large zip lock bags for storage after wards & paper if you want prints.
  • Large bottle of Witch Hazel, Peroxide and large container of table salt (for stains) and container of sea salt (for healing your bottom, if necessary).
  • “4 plastic trash bags for cleanup and removal of soiled laundry
  • At least two rolls of paper towels

For after the birth, some things you will want to consider for your baby and yourself should include:
  • For Baby; T-shirt, socks, hat, diaper and blanket.  Choose your new baby's clothing according to the weather.  Plan to dress your baby one layer warmer than you would dress yourself, as sometimes small babies have issues maintaining their own body temperature for the first 24 hours.
  • For mom; Clean gown or pajamas that will have easy access for nursing.  A bathrobe if desired for trips to the bathroom or to be covered for visitors.  Several pairs of comfortable, full sized underwear that you can place a menstrual pad into. Socks or slippers for your feet.

Optional:

  • Shower seat
  • Birth Ball
